Introduction

Moving Towards Establishing the new Adult Advancement and Careers Service

Recently there have been two key publications that indicate the future direction of travel for the adult IAG service following the cross departmental review of IAG that was undertaken in 2006:

World Class Skills – Implementing the Leitch Review of Skills in England outlines how

DIUS and DWP will work together to create a joined-up employment and skills system. It also states the intention to “merge the information and advice services of learndirect and nextstep providers into a new universal adult careers service in England, working in partnership with Jobcentre Plus.  The new careers service will ensure that everyone is able to access the help they need to take stock of where they are in achieving their goals and ambitions, and to get the support they need to advance themselves and achieve their full potential.”

The white paper - Opportunities, Employment and Progression: making skills work indicates that the new adult careers service will be an advancement service, with the potential to help every member of society get on in learning and work

Both of these publications signal closer working relationships between IAG providers, Jobcentre Plus and other agencies and it is behind this backdrop that we have set the following objectives for the LSC National IAG Conference:

• To provide delegates with an overview of the future direction of the adult careers service 2010/11
• To discuss the transitional arrangements to ensure a successful launch of the new service in 2010
• To clarify next steps

This conference is aimed at all those agencies interested in IAG services for adults including representatives from local and regional LSC, nextstep Contractors, national stakeholders and key Government Departments.
