Welcome to International Clinical Summit
Introduction
Earlier this year, Prime Minister Gordon Brown asked Professor Ara Darzi to undertake a review of the NHS. The NHS Next Stage Review provides an opportunity to ensure that the future of the NHS is clinically led and can meet the challenges of delivering health care over the next decade.
On 4 October, the Review’s interim report Our NHS, Our future was published www.ournhs.nhs.uk. The report marks the first stage of the Review by acknowledging the huge progress already made following ten years of significant improvements patient care and health services. It highlights that delivering the highest quality of care for all, as good or better than any country in the world, must be the fundamental goal of the NHS. The report marks the start of developing a new vision for the NHS – a once in a generation opportunity to shape the NHS of the future and create a healthcare system that is universally world class.
The NHS Next Stage Review now enters its most important phase – developing the vision over the next few months into a meaningful set of plans for the future that deliver the highest quality of care for all - with the International Clinical Summit in November being very much a part of the continuing programme. The clinical pathway groups in each Strategic Health Authority will drive a core part of this work. The groups will focus on how to deliver the best outcomes for patients, based on the best evidence available, across eight different pathways from birth to end of life care.
The Summit aims to share best practice and ensure consistency of output from each of the pathway groups, as well as, recognising common themes arising from regional work and gaining an understanding of the national picture emerging in each pathway.
Places have been issued to those involved in clinical pathway work, their Chairs, facilitators, all the members, key stakeholders and other local NHS representatives involved in taking forward the next phase of the NHS Next Stage Review.
